October 26-November 1, 1986

October 26-November 1, 1986

My travel buddy Andy from New York called again for another trip. I am easy when it comes to travel invitations. He suggested a week at the Club Med in Cancun, Mexico. Sounds like fun for two bachelors. In the evening there was plenty of group entertainment. During the day Andy and I have different tastes. He likes the beach and I like to do things. With my new Scuba certification, I dove every morning. With the warm water, it was so much nicer than frigid Pearl Lake.

In the afternoon, I took a boating class and learned to sail in their tiny Sunfish dinghy. Club Med also gives water ski lessons in the nearby lagoon. It was easier than I thought but in retrospect, I should have kept an eye out for crocodiles.

On Friday I signed up for an all-day excursion to nearby island of Cozumel. It is famous for Scuba diving. It is a short puddle-jump flight in a tiny plane and then a tiny, packed boat out to the reef. The first dive was at Palancar Reef to see the Christ statue along with anemones, crabs, and sponges. The visibility was incredible. The next dive was at Paradise where I swam with an enormous Grouper. So cool!
